Merdiven

Merdiven is the Turkish term for a staircase or stairway, a sequence of steps that connects two or more levels in a building or outdoor setting. It enables vertical movement and often forms part of a structure’s spatial expression. A merdiven typically includes treads, risers, stringers, and landings. Its geometry—rise, run, and headroom—affects comfort, safety, and access.

Staircases are classified by configuration: straight, L-shaped (quarter-turn), U-shaped, spiral, and curved. The choice depends on space, circulation needs, and design intent.

Materials range from wood and concrete to steel, stone, or composite, with finishes that emphasize warmth, durability, or lightness. Some merdiven integrate decorative balustrades, lighting, or built-in storage, especially in traditional Turkish architecture.

Safety and accessibility are emphasized by codes and standards. Common requirements include handrails on one or both sides, guardrails for open sides, uniform tread depths and riser heights, adequate illumination, and sufficient headroom. Public buildings often have additional accessibility provisions.
