Menstruator

A menstruator is a person who menstruates. Menstruation is the monthly shedding of the uterine lining in people with a uterus, accompanied by bleeding. This is a natural biological process that typically occurs in individuals assigned female at birth. While most menstruators are cisgender women, transgender men, non-binary individuals, and people of other gender identities can also menstruate if they have a uterus and ovaries.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones and usually lasts around 28 days, though variations are common. The process involves ovulation, where an egg is released from the ovary, followed by changes in the uterine lining to prepare for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the lining breaks down and is expelled from the body through the vagina as menstrual fluid. This fluid consists of blood, tissue, and mucus.

Menstruation is a sign of reproductive health and fertility for many. The experience of menstruation can vary greatly among individuals, with differences in cycle length, flow intensity, duration of bleeding, and associated symptoms like cramping, bloating, and mood changes. These experiences are often influenced by factors such as age, genetics, health status, and lifestyle. Menstrual hygiene involves practices to manage menstrual flow, such as using pads, tampons, menstrual cups, or period underwear, to maintain cleanliness and comfort.
