Membrankonstruktionen, also known as membrane structures, are a type of lightweight architectural design that utilizes tensioned membranes to create expansive and often free-form spaces. These structures derive their stability from the pre-tensioning of the membrane material, which can be fabrics like PVC-coated polyester, PTFE-coated glass fiber, or even ETFE foil. The shape and form of a membrane structure are dictated by the material's elasticity and the forces applied through a system of cables, masts, and anchor points.

The underlying principle of membrane construction is the efficient distribution of tensile forces. Unlike traditional rigid structures that rely on compression and bending, membrane structures primarily work under tension. This allows for very large spans with minimal internal support, leading to visually striking and open interior environments. The translucency of many membrane materials also allows for natural daylight to penetrate the interior, reducing the need for artificial lighting and contributing to energy efficiency.

Applications of membrane structures are diverse, ranging from sports stadiums, exhibition halls, and transportation terminals to temporary event shelters and architectural landmarks. Their ability to be prefabricated and rapidly assembled makes them suitable for projects with tight deadlines or for temporary installations. The design process involves sophisticated computational analysis to ensure the structural integrity and stability of the membrane under various load conditions, including wind and snow.
