Membraneerisia

Membraneerisia is a genus of fungi within the family Membranaceae. It is characterized by its distinctive, membranous fruiting bodies that resemble thin, translucent sheets or webs. These fungi are typically found in temperate and tropical regions, growing on decaying wood, leaf litter, or other organic matter. The genus includes several species, each with unique morphological features and ecological roles.

One of the most well-known species is Membraneerisia radicata, commonly known as the webcap. This species produces a thin, web-like fruiting body that can grow to several centimeters in diameter. The webcap is often found growing on the bark of trees, particularly in deciduous forests. It is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming a symbiotic relationship with tree roots, which helps the tree absorb nutrients from the soil.

Membraneerisia fungi are of interest to mycologists due to their unique morphology and ecological significance. They play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and soil health, contributing to the decomposition of organic matter. Despite their ecological importance, Membraneerisia species are not typically cultivated for food or medicinal purposes, as they are not known to produce any notable secondary metabolites.
