Melegszálhúzás

Melegszálhúzás, meaning "hot wire drawing" in Hungarian, refers to a metalworking process. It involves drawing a metal rod or wire through a die at an elevated temperature. This process is primarily used to reduce the diameter of metal stock and to improve its mechanical properties.

The elevated temperature significantly lowers the yield strength of the metal, making it more ductile and easier to deform. This allows for greater reductions in cross-sectional area per pass compared to cold drawing. Hot drawing is often employed for materials that are difficult to work with at room temperature or when large deformations are required. Common applications include the production of seamless pipes, structural steel components, and various wire products.

The process typically involves heating the metal to a specific temperature, often above its recrystallization temperature, before it is pulled through a die. The die is shaped to impart the desired final diameter and profile. Lubrication is crucial in hot drawing to reduce friction between the workpiece and the die, preventing excessive wear and ensuring a smooth surface finish. While it can achieve significant size reductions, hot drawing may result in a less precise surface finish and tighter dimensional tolerances compared to cold drawing. The resulting microstructure is generally characterized by equiaxed grains due to recrystallization during the process.
