MelaminureaFormaldehyd, commonly abbreviated MUF, refers to a class of thermosetting amino resins formed by condensation of melamine, urea and formaldehyde. These resins are designed to combine the moisture resistance and heat stability of melamine with the cost effectiveness of urea, making them useful as wood adhesive systems.

The resin is prepared by controlled condensation of formaldehyde with melamine and urea under acidic or basic conditions, forming prepolymers that further cross-link upon curing. The ratio of melamine to urea and the degree of condensation determine key properties such as water resistance, mechanical strength, cure speed and formaldehyde emission. Higher melamine content generally improves hydrolytic stability and reduces formaldehyde release, but raises material costs and can affect cure kinetics.

Properties and performance of MUF resins include good adhesion to wood substrates, enhanced hydrolytic stability compared with urea–formaldehyde resins, and suitable performance in moderate-to-high moisture environments. They are typically cured by hot pressing at elevated temperatures, where cross-linking yields a rigid network. The formaldehyde emissions of MUF resins are usually lower than those of UF resins but remain a consideration under regional emission standards.

Applications are dominated by wood-based panels and related products. MUF resins are used as adhesives for particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), plywood and edge bandings, as well as in some decorative laminates and furniture components where moisture resistance is advantageous.

Safety and regulation focus on formaldehyde emissions and worker exposure. MUF-based adhesives must meet regional standards (for example, formaldehyde emission limits in wood products) to ensure indoor air quality and environmental compliance.
