Megvétózni

Megvétózni is a Hungarian verb that translates to "to veto" in English. It describes the act of exercising a veto power, which is the right to unilaterally stop a particular decision or proposal from being enacted, even if it has majority support. This power is most commonly associated with political bodies, such as legislatures or international organizations, where certain individuals or groups are granted the authority to block actions.

In a political context, a veto can be an absolute veto, meaning the vetoed proposal cannot be overridden, or a qualified veto, which can be overridden by a supermajority vote. The concept of veto power originates from ancient Rome, where tribunes of the plebs had the power to veto the actions of magistrates and the Senate. In modern times, the United Nations Security Council is a prominent example where the five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) each hold veto power over substantive resolutions.
