Megválasztani

Megválasztani is a Hungarian verb meaning to elect, to choose someone for a position or office, usually by a formal or collective decision, such as a parliamentary body, a voters’ assembly, or a committee. It is used when the outcome is the appointment of a person to a role rather than a simple personal choice.

Etymology and aspect: The verb is formed from the root választani (to choose) with the prefix meg-, which in Hungarian frequently marks completion or a definite result and yields a perfective aspect. The infinitive megválasztani denotes the act as a completed event relative to the reference time. The related adjective megválasztott means elected; megválasztottak are those who have been elected.

Usage: The act requires an object referring to the person being elected and typically an indication of the office. Examples: A közgyűlés megválasztotta az elnököt.
