Meeleoluhäired

Meeleoluhäired is a proposed endangered language from the Northern islands of Estonia. The language belongs to the Uralic language family and is spoken by a small number of people, primarily in the islands of Hiiumaa and Runav digit in the Baltic Sea.

Meeleoluhäired has distinct dialects, with some speakers claiming to understand each other while others have difficulties communicating. Efforts to document and preserve the language have been made by local linguists and cultural organizations, but many of the dialects and vocabulary are considered to be at risk of being lost due to the language's endangered status.

Language contact and the influence of surrounding languages such as Estonian and Finnish have also been factors affecting the linguistic development of Meeleoluhäired. Code-switching and code-mixing are common occurrences in everyday conversations, as speakers often switch between Meeleoluhäired and other languages, especially when interacting with people who do not speak Meeleoluhäired.

Efforts to document and preserve the language include linguistic fieldwork, language documentation, and cultural revitalization programs. The RANNAM team, a university research center, has been active in mapping and documenting the language. Additionally, cultural and historical events are held to promote awareness of Meeleoluhäired and other endangered languages in the region. Despite the challenges facing the language, the efforts of linguists, anthropologists, and community members continue in a bid to preserve and document Meeleoluhäired for future generations.
