The name is derived from the Old Welsh *Medrawt*, meaning "son of Medrawd," and is associated with various tales of heroism, prophecy, and tragic fate. Medrauts is often linked to the broader cycle of stories surrounding King Arthur and his knights, particularly those involving the quest for the Holy Grail.

In some versions of the legend, Medrauts is depicted as a knight of the Round Table, known for his wisdom and moral integrity. He is sometimes portrayed as a prophet or seer, capable of foretelling future events, including the downfall of Arthur’s kingdom. One of the most famous accounts of Medrauts appears in the 12th-century work *Culhwch and Olwen*, where he is mentioned as a wise counselor to King Arthur. His prophecies often carry a somber tone, emphasizing the inevitability of Arthur’s eventual defeat by his own son, Mordred.

Medrauts is also referenced in later Arthurian romances, such as those by Robert de Boron, where he is sometimes conflated with other figures like Joseph of Arimathea or other Grail-associated characters. His role in these narratives varies, but he frequently serves as a moral guide or a tragic figure whose foresight cannot prevent the unfolding of fate. Some traditions suggest that Medrauts himself may have been a Grail knight, though this is not consistently supported across all versions of the legend.
