Medhjælper is a Danish term that generally refers to a person who assists in medical or health-related settings. The role is typically non-licensed and involves providing support to nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, as well as to patients. Duties and responsibilities vary by employer and context, and the title is used across several care environments.

Common tasks for medhjælpere include helping patients with daily activities such as personal hygiene, dressing and eating, assisting with mobility and transfers, and supporting meals and daily routines. They may help maintain a clean and safe care environment, restock supplies, transport materials, and perform routine administrative or documentation tasks under supervision. In some cases, medhjælpere may assist with basic observations or report changes in a patient’s condition to qualified staff, but they do not perform clinical procedures or administer medications unless specifically trained and authorized.

Training and qualifications differ by setting. Some medhjælpere enter the workforce with minimal formal education and receive on-the-job training, while other paths in the Danish system involve more formal vocational education, such as the social- og sundhedsuddannelsen (SOSU) or related qualifications. Regardless of prior training, medhjælpere work under supervision and complement licensed professionals, serving as a support layer in care delivery.
