Meccano

Meccano is a construction toy system that enables the building of mechanical and structural models from modular parts. The basic components are perforated metal strips and plates with a regular pattern of holes, along with angle girders, wheels, gears, and axles. Nuts, bolts, and washers join the parts, allowing adjustable joints and rotating mechanisms. Sets often include pulleys, belts, and decorative pieces to add realism. The system is designed for reuse and experimentation, with parts that can be combined in many configurations.

Meccano was invented by Frank Hornby in England and first marketed in 1898 under the name Mechanics. The range was later rebranded as Meccano, and a dedicated company, Meccano Ltd, was established to manufacture and export sets. In the early 20th century, Meccano became widely popular in schools and homes, and the company published Meccano Magazine to accompany its products. The metal construction system influenced the development of hobby modeling and contributed to the broader tradition of modular construction toys.

Over time, Meccano diversified its ranges to include plastic components and specialized sets that illustrate engineering and robotics concepts. The brand has changed ownership several times and has been distributed worldwide through various licensees, with production continuing in different forms into the 21st century. Meccano remains associated with hands-on learning, mechanical design, and the do-it-yourself maker ethos, appealing to both beginners and experienced builders.
