Meaningin

Meaningin is a theoretical term in linguistics and cognitive science that describes the process by which a listener derives the speaker's intended meaning from an utterance within a given context. Coined to capture the inferential step between literal content and communicative goal, meaningin emphasizes that interpretation depends on context, prior knowledge, and social cues as well as the speaker's intent.

In practice, meaningin is seen as bridging semantics and pragmatics. Semantics deals with literal meaning of words and sentences; pragmatics deals with use and context; meaningin focuses on the alignment between what the speaker intends and what the listener perceives, as mediated by context and inference. The concept has components such as context (situational and linguistic), background knowledge, and communicative intent.

Researchers sometimes model meaningin as a score or function that maps an utterance, context, and hearer—M(u, C, H)—to a degree of alignment with the intended meaning, often on a 0 to 1 scale.
