Mautpflicht

Mautpflicht, literally toll obligation, denotes the legal requirement to pay charges for using defined parts of the transport network, typically motorways, bridges, and tunnels. The aim is to fund maintenance and development of infrastructure and, in some systems, to influence traffic levels and vehicle emissions. Toll regimes differ by country and road type.

Toll collection is implemented in several forms. Distance-based tolls charge per kilometer driven on tolled sections and are commonly paid via onboard units, license-plate recognition, or electronic accounts. Time-based schemes, often called vignettes, allow unrestricted use for a limited period after purchase. Vehicle-based or axle-based tolls determine charges according to vehicle category, weight, or number of axles. Some roads are toll-exempt or offer discounts for specific users or goods.

Enforcement relies on automated systems such as cameras, weigh stations, or GPS-based tracking; non-payment can lead to fines, penalties, and sometimes disqualification from using the tolled network.

In German-speaking contexts, Mautpflicht is closely associated with truck tolls on motorways. In Austria, cars must hold an Autobahnvignette, while heavy goods vehicles are charged by the LSVA. Switzerland uses a toll system for heavy vehicles (LSVA). Outside these contexts, many countries maintain toll roads or toll rings with varying rules.

The term is part of broader road-usage policies, sometimes debated for fairness, administrative cost, and environmental impact.
