Mauseteisen

Mauseteisen is a type of wrought iron sculpture typically used in the Düsseldorf Docklands, a former industrial area in Düsseldorf, Germany. These iron animals, mostly monkeys, are estimated to number around 100 in the area, created by an anonymous artist or artists.

Reports of the Mauseteisen dating back to at least the 1960s, with early observers writing about the bizarre and unique sight of metal monkeys perched on rooftops and in doorways. The timing and motivations behind their creation remain unclear to this day.

The sculptures are made from waste iron, recycled from scrap and transformed into the lifelike creatures. Over time, the region's transformation from a thriving industry to modern office buildings led to discussions around the Mauseteisen's fate. Initially threatened with removal, the community rallied to save the artworks, which they have come to consider an integral part of the area's character.

Today, the Mauseteisen are recognized as a unique aspect of Düsseldorf's urban landscape and a notable example of so-called " outsider art." The Düsseldorf Docklands management has taken measures to ensure their preservation and integration into the area's transformation into a popular tourist destination and vibrant neighborhood life hub.
