Matses

The Matses are an indigenous ethnic group native to the Amazon rainforest, primarily residing in the Yavari River valley along the border between Peru and Brazil. Historically known as the "People of the Jaguar" due to their past ritualistic practices involving jaguar teeth and their perceived connection to the animal, the Matses have largely maintained their traditional way of life, although increasing contact with the outside world has brought changes.

The Matses language belongs to the Panoan language family.
