Materialfaser

Materialfaser is a generic term used in materials science to describe a slender, elongated filament made from a material with distinctive mechanical, thermal, or chemical properties. Fibers can be continuous or discontinuous (short) and are used to carry load, modify material properties, or enable new functionalities in a wide range of products. They are typically categorized by material class (polymer, ceramic, metal) and by production method (spun, drawn, or deposited).

Polymer fibers are often produced by melt spinning or solution/spinning, while ceramic and metal fibers may be created by sol-gel processes, chemical vapor deposition, drawing from a precursor, or other deposition routes. Carbon fibers, a widely used subclass, are typically produced from carbon-rich precursors through stabilization and carbonization. The choice of precursor, processing conditions, and post-treatment determine the fiber’s strength, modulus, diameter, and surface characteristics.

Key properties of materialfaser include tensile strength, Young’s modulus, density, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. The fiber axis largely governs mechanical behavior, and surface treatments, such as sizing, can improve adhesion to matrices in composites. The aspect ratio and fiber orientation also influence processing and performance in end-use applications.

Applications span textiles, reinforced composites in aerospace and automotive sectors, civil engineering (fiber-reinforced concrete and mortars), filtration media, and sensing or actuation technologies. Considerations in development include cost, manufacturability, compatibility with matrices, environmental impact, and end-of-life options. Standards for testing and characterizing fiber properties are used to ensure consistency across applications.
