Materiaalinteracties refer to the phenomena that occur when different materials come into contact or are subjected to shared environmental conditions. These interactions can range from simple physical touching to complex chemical reactions. Understanding these interactions is crucial in many scientific and engineering fields, including materials science, chemistry, and physics, as they dictate the performance, longevity, and safety of materials and structures.

One common type of material interaction is adhesion, where two different surfaces stick together. This can be due to van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, or even chemical bonding. Conversely, friction is a force that opposes the relative motion of surfaces in contact, arising from the microscopic roughness and intermolecular forces between them. Wear is another significant interaction, involving the loss of material from a surface due to mechanical action, such as abrasion, adhesion, or fatigue.

Chemical interactions are also prevalent. Corrosion, for instance, is the degradation of a material due to a chemical reaction with its environment, commonly seen with metals reacting with oxygen or moisture. In contrast, compatibility between materials is vital for applications like composites or alloys, where constituents must not react detrimentally with each other. Dissolution, where one material dissolves into another, is another important chemical interaction, particularly relevant in solutions and mixtures.
