Masuk

Masuk is a common word in Indonesian and Malay that functions primarily as a verb meaning to enter or to go in. It can refer to physically moving into a place, or to entering a situation, organization, or category. The term is used in both everyday speech and formal writing.

In Indonesian grammar, masuk is generally intransitive and often paired with a preposition to indicate direction, such as ke: masuk ke rumah (to enter the house) or masuk ke sekolah (to enroll in school). For more explicit transitive senses, the related word memasuki is used to mean “to enter into” something, while memasukkan means “to insert” or “to put into.” The noun form masukan refers to input, insertion, or data entry, as in masukan data (data input).

Masuk appears in several idiomatic expressions. Masuk akal means “to make sense” or “to be reasonable.” Masuk angin is a colloquial expression for catching a mild cold or feeling unwell. Other phrases convey inclusion, such as masuk daftar or masuk dalam daftar, meaning to be included on a list; or masuk kerja, meaning to start or join a job; and masuk ke universitas, meaning to gain admission to a university (more formal: diterima di universitas).

The term is widespread in both Indonesian and Malay and appears in various compounds and fixed expressions across registers, from casual speech to formal contexts.
