Maskindirektiv

Maskindirektiv, commonly referred to in English as the Machinery Directive (Directive 2006/42/EC), is a European Union directive that sets essential health and safety requirements for machinery placed on the market or put into service within the EU. It applies to a broad range of machinery, including almost all new machines, safety components, and certain parts of machinery designed to be integrated with other equipment. The directive also covers attachments and safety devices intended to be part of a machine, while it generally excludes fixed installations that are treated under other legislation and some road vehicles.

The core aim of the directive is to ensure a high level of protection for health and safety by requiring compliance with essential health and safety requirements (EHSR) described in Annex I. Compliance is typically demonstrated through risk assessment, design and manufacturing controls, and the use of harmonized European standards (EN) that provide presumption of conformity. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that their machinery meets the EHSR and for preparing the technical documentation needed to prove conformity.

Conformity assessment and CE marking are central to the process. Depending on the category and complexity of the machinery, a manufacturer may use internal production control or involve a Notified Body in the conformity assessment. Once conformity is demonstrated, the manufacturer issues an EC Declaration of Conformity and affixes the CE mark to the product, signaling compliance with EU requirements. The directive also imposes obligations related to documentation, labeling, user information, and post-market surveillance, with responsibilities shared among manufacturers, authorized representatives, importers, and distributors.

Together with related directives and standards, the Maskindirektiv provides a regulatory framework that facilitates intra-EU trade while promoting safety and health in workplaces and consumer environments.
