Masinõmblusnõelad are specialized needles designed for use with sewing machines. Unlike hand-sewing needles, machine sewing needles have a flat shank that allows them to be securely held in the sewing machine's needle clamp. They also feature a scarf, which is a groove on the back of the needle that helps the bobbin thread to form a loop for the looper or hook to catch. The sharpness and design of the needle point are crucial for piercing fabric cleanly and preventing skipped stitches.

There are various types of machine sewing needles, distinguished by their size, point type, and system. Needle size, often referred to by the metric system (e.g., 80/12) or the American system (e.g., size 12), indicates the needle's diameter. A smaller number signifies a finer needle, suitable for lightweight fabrics, while a larger number denotes a thicker needle for heavier materials.

The point type of a machine sewing needle is matched to the fabric being sewn. Universal points are suitable for a wide range of fabrics. Ballpoint needles have a rounded tip that glides between fabric fibers, ideal for knits and stretch fabrics to avoid snagging. Sharp or microtex needles have a very fine, sharp point for precise stitching on tightly woven fabrics like silk and microfiber. Specialized needles exist for denim, leather, and embroidery, each designed to handle specific fabric challenges. The needle system refers to the manufacturing standard and shank shape, ensuring compatibility with specific sewing machine models. Regularly changing machine sewing needles is recommended, as dull or bent needles can cause damage to fabric and affect stitch quality.
