Martinist

Martinist refers to a family of esoteric and mystical organizations that trace their origins to the teachings of Martinez de Pasqually, a French occultist of the 18th century. These groups are often associated with Martinism, a spiritual path that emphasizes spiritual regeneration, the attainment of divine knowledge, and the restoration of humanity's original state. Key tenets of Martinism typically include belief in a divine creator, the pre-existence of the soul, and the concept of a "Great Work" or spiritual transformation.

Martinez de Pasqually established the "Order of the Elect Cohens" in the mid-18th century, which served as the foundation for later Martinist orders. Following his death, his teachings were disseminated and reinterpreted by various disciples, most notably Louis Claude de Saint-Martin, whose name became closely associated with the movement. Saint-Martin, a philosopher and mystic, emphasized inner contemplation and direct experience of the divine over ritualistic practices.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, various Martinist orders emerged and evolved, often incorporating elements from other esoteric traditions such as Kabbalah, Freemasonry, and Rosicrucianism. While there is no single, universally recognized Martinist organization, contemporary Martinist groups generally share a focus on spiritual development, personal gnosis, and the study of symbolism. Membership often involves a series of initiations and degrees designed to guide the aspirant towards spiritual understanding and union with the divine. The emphasis is on individual spiritual work rather than collective action.
