Marojejy

Marojejy is a national park located in the northeast of Madagascar. It is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and rugged mountainous terrain. The park covers an area of approximately 60,000 hectares and is part of the larger Marojejy Massif, a significant geological formation. The highest peak within the park reaches over 2,100 meters.

The park's ecosystem is characterized by a variety of forest types, including rainforests, dry deciduous forests, and montane forests, reflecting the altitudinal gradients. These diverse habitats support a rich array of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to Madagascar. Notable species found in Marojejy include several lemur species, such as the critically endangered silky sifaka, as well as various reptiles, amphibians, and a wide variety of birdlife. The park is also home to unique plant species, including orchids and giant tree ferns.

Marojejy National Park was established in 1952 and is managed by Madagascar National Parks. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Rainforests of the Atsinanana. The park offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation, with several trails providing access to different parts of the massif. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the park's fragile ecosystems from threats such as illegal logging and bushmeat hunting. Its remote location and challenging terrain contribute to its pristine natural state, making it a vital sanctuary for Madagascar's unique biodiversity.
