Atsinanana

Atsinanana is one of the 22 regions of Madagascar. It is located in the eastern part of the island, bordering the Indian Ocean. The capital of the Atsinanana region is Toamasina, which is also the second-largest city in Madagascar and its principal port. The region's name, "Atsinanana," translates to "East" in the Malagasy language, reflecting its geographical position.

The landscape of Atsinanana is characterized by a narrow coastal plain that gradually rises to the central highlands. The region is known for its lush vegetation, tropical rainforests, and a humid climate. Rivers originating from the highlands flow through Atsinanana towards the ocean, often creating navigable waterways. Agriculture is a significant economic activity, with rice, cloves, vanilla, coffee, and pepper being important crops. The region also has considerable natural resources, including timber and mineral deposits, although their exploitation is often limited by environmental concerns and accessibility.

Atsinanana is home to a diverse population, with various ethnic groups and cultural traditions. The Betsimisaraka people are the most prominent ethnic group in the region.
