Maredret

Maredret is a municipality located in the Liège Province of Belgium. It forms part of the Liège area and is situated in the Walloon region of Belgium. As of 2021, the total population of Maredret is slightly above 570 residents, making it a relatively small municipality.

The name "Maredret" is derived from the French words for "moor" and "retreat". Maredret is known for its woodland and fields, with the area covering a total land area of approximately 15.06 square kilometers. The terrain is hilly with most of it covered in forests and pastures.

Economically, Maredret relies on various small-scale agricultural activities, including livestock rearing, cash crops, and carpentry. As with many small towns, local community centers play a significant role in organizing various community events. These events foster social interaction among residents and provide an opportunity for the community to bond.

Located near the municipality are local hiking paths that offer tourists a chance to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding region. Two nearby communes,'s-Gravenbrakel and Pont, have historical homes of architectural significance, allowing visitors to learn more about the local architectural styles.

The current mayor of Maredret, appointed at the municipal elections held in 2018, remains at the helm of local affairs. The municipality is no longer perfectly bilingual, due to an obsolescent Francization policy established some time ago. Notably, many residents speak both Flemish and French, reflecting the language diversity typical of the Walloon region.
