Manutiukselle

Manutiukselle is a Finnish allative form derived from the proper name Manutius, and is used in scholarly Finnish to mean “to Manutius” or “for Manutius.” In this linguistic sense, the term appears when attributing actions, works, or ideas to the printer and publisher Aldus Manutius, rather than naming a distinct subject of its own.

Aldus Manutius (c. 1450–1515) was a Venetian humanist printer and the founder of the Aldine Press in Venice. He played a central role in the dissemination of Greek and Latin classics during the Renaissance and helped shape modern typography and book production. His innovations included the introduction of portable octavo editions that made books more affordable and widely available, and the development of a compact typographic style. The italic type commonly associated with his workshop appeared around 1501 and is often linked to Francesco da Bologna. Manutius’s editions, marked by the Aldine anchor, became influential models for scholarly publishing and typography for centuries.
