Mannréttindadómstóll

Mannréttindadómstóll is the Faroese term for a court that deals with human rights matters. While not a standalone institution in the same way as the European Court of Human Rights, the concept of human rights is integrated into the Faroese legal system. Cases involving alleged human rights violations can be brought before the Faroese courts, which are tasked with applying both national and international human rights law. This includes interpreting and upholding rights guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, to which the Faroe Islands are bound through the Kingdom of Denmark.

If a person believes their human rights have been violated and domestic remedies have been exhausted without a satisfactory outcome, they may have the option to bring their case before the European Court of Human Rights. The Faroese judicial system, therefore, acts as the primary forum for human rights adjudication within the Faroe Islands, with the possibility of appeal to a supranational body for further review. The principle of human rights protection is a fundamental aspect of Faroese law, ensuring that individuals have recourse when they believe their fundamental rights have been infringed.
