Manifoldbased

Manifoldbased is a term used to describe methods, theories, and frameworks that emphasize manifolds as the central organizing principle for data and problems. In this usage, data are assumed to lie on or near a lower-dimensional manifold embedded in a higher-dimensional ambient space, rather than being distributed uniformly in Euclidean space.

In data science and machine learning, manifoldbased approaches underpin nonlinear dimensionality reduction and representation learning. They aim to preserve intrinsic geometry and topological structure when mapping high-dimensional data to lower dimensions. Well-known manifoldbased techniques include Isomap, locally linear embedding (LLE), t-SNE, UMAP, and diffusion maps, as well as tangent-space and geodesic-based methods used for statistical analysis on manifolds.

In mathematics and statistics, manifoldbased work includes differential geometry, topology, and the study of data and functions defined on manifolds. Concepts such as geodesics, tangent spaces, and curvature provide tools for modeling shapes, trajectories, and probability distributions on curved spaces. Applications include statistics on manifolds, computer vision, and robotics.

Applications and challenges: The approach is valued for revealing intrinsic structure and enabling more faithful representations, but it faces issues such as unknown or complex manifold topology, noise, sampling density, choice of distance or similarity measures, and computational demands for large datasets.
