MaliT628

Mali-T628 is a graphics processing unit (GPU) designed by ARM Holdings for mobile devices. It is part of the Mali-T6xx family, developed to provide improved graphics performance and energy efficiency for smartphones and tablets in the early to mid-2010s. As with other ARM Mali designs, the Mali-T628 was offered in multiple configurations by different SoC partners, with the exact number of shader cores and clock speeds varying by implementation.

Architecture and configuration concepts: The GPU employs a multi-core, shared-resource architecture with shader clusters that handle graphics and compute tasks in parallel. In practice, device makers could select from different MP (multi-processor) configurations to balance performance and battery life for specific devices. The precise core count, clock speeds, and memory bandwidth were not standardized across all products, reflecting ARM’s licensing model that allows customization by partners.

Features and API support: The Mali-T628 was designed to support common mobile graphics APIs of its era, such as OpenGL ES, and to offer hardware acceleration for 3D rendering, texture processing, and related workloads. Graphics drivers and software stacks provided by OEMs determined the level of API support and optimization on a per-device basis. Vulkan support, if available, would have been through later driver updates rather than a fixed specification at launch.

Deployment and legacy: The Mali-T628 appeared in a range of mid-range devices in the early to mid-2010s and was progressively superseded by newer Mali GPUs in subsequent generations. Its role in the ARM Mali lineup illustrates ARM’s approach of offering scalable, license-based GPUs to a broad ecosystem of device makers.
