Maknae refers to the youngest member of a group, most commonly used in the context of K-pop or other East Asian entertainment industries. This term originates from the Korean language. The maknae often holds a special position within a group, sometimes being doted upon by older members. Conversely, in some groups, the maknae might be expected to be more mature or responsible than their age would suggest. The dynamics of a group can significantly revolve around the maknae's personality and their interactions with the hyungs (older males) or unnis (older females). While the term strictly means "youngest," it has become widely recognized as a specific role within idol groups, similar to how a leader is identified.
