Maiiagala

Maiiagala is a coastal town in western Eldoria. It sits on the delta of the Lira River, facing a sheltered bay and backed by low hills. The town experiences a maritime climate with mild winters and dry summers.

The name Maiiagala is derived from the local language, with Maiia meaning sea and agala meaning gate or opening, a reference to the town’s position at the river mouth.

Historically, Maiiagala dates to the 12th century as a fishing settlement that grew into a regional port by the 14th century. It attained municipal status in 1785 and has since developed as a center for trade and craft.

The population is around 9,500 people. The economy centers on fishing and fish processing, with small-scale boat building, agriculture in surrounding countryside, and some tourism tied to the harbor and coastal scenery.

Cultural life centers on the annual Harbor Festival, featuring boat races, seafood markets, and traditional music. Local crafts include rope making and carved wooden boats. The town is served by a coastal highway and a short railway spur linking to the regional capital, with a small port handling passenger ferries and cargo.
