Magnetictunable refers to materials, devices, or systems whose key properties can be adjusted in a controlled manner by applying an external magnetic field. The tunability can affect optical, electronic, magnetic, or mechanical characteristics, enabling reconfigurability without physical alteration of the device.

Several physical effects underpin magnetic tunability. The Faraday effect causes rotation of the polarization plane of light in magneto-optical media as a function of the magnetic field. Magnetic permeability and anisotropy in ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic materials change in response to field, shifting resonances in microwave devices or altering refractive indices in magneto-optical materials. Magnetostriction induces mechanical dimension changes under field, modifying resonant frequencies in sensors and actuators. In some systems, external fields influence charge transport through spin-dependent effects such as magnetoresistance.

Common magnetically tunable materials include ferrites and garnets such as yttrium iron garnet, other ferrimagnetic oxides, magnetorheological fluids, and certain multiferroics; engineered structures using metamaterials and photonic crystals employ tunable magnetic elements like ferrite cores or split-ring resonators to adjust response. Applications span tunable optical filters, phase shifters, modulators, magnetic sensors, and adaptive optics components. In telecommunications, magnetically tunable filters and isolators support channel selection and noise suppression.

Limitations and challenges include the need for relatively strong magnetic fields, hysteresis, temperature sensitivity, and potential losses that reduce efficiency. Tuning speed depends on the material and mechanism, often ranging from microseconds to milliseconds. Integration with compact, low-power systems remains an active area of development.

Ongoing research seeks low-field, wideband, low-loss magnetically tunable systems, including novel multiferroics, improved magneto-optical materials, and compact metamaterials that enable on-chip tunability for communication and sensing.
