Macrotus

Macrotus is a genus of bats belonging to the family Phyllostomidae, commonly known as leaf-nosed bats. These bats are found in the Americas, ranging from Mexico southward through Central and South America. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Macrotus californicus, the California leaf-nosed bat, and Macrotus waterhousii, Waterhouse's leaf-nosed bat.

The California leaf-nosed bat is found in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions. Waterhouse's leaf-nosed bat has a wider distribution, occurring from Mexico south to Hispaniola and Cuba. Both species are cave dwellers, roosting in mines, caves, and abandoned buildings.

Macrotus bats are medium-sized, with large ears and a distinctive leaf-like appendage on their nose, which plays a role in echolocation. Their fur is typically grayish-brown. They are insectivorous, feeding primarily on moths, beetles, and other flying insects, which they often catch in flight or glean from surfaces. Their echolocation calls are relatively high in frequency, aiding in the detection of small prey.

These bats are generally solitary or form small roosting groups. While their conservation status varies by species and region, habitat loss and disturbance are potential threats. Research into Macrotus bats continues to shed light on their ecological roles and adaptations to their environments.
