Safeguarding measures include fixed guards such as metal enclosures or fences, interlocking guards that stop the machine when opened, adjustable or movable guards for access during setup, safety enclosures, and barriers around hazardous areas. Access control devices like safety interlocks, presence-sensing devices, and emergency stop buttons are used to ensure rapid shutdown when needed. Guarding is often complemented by safe operating procedures, warning signage, and clear access routes for maintenance activity.

Design and assessment principles rely on a risk-based approach. A risk assessment identifies hazards associated with machinery, determines appropriate guarding, and considers usability, maintenance, and lifecycle. Standards commonly applied include ISO 12100 for risk assessment and risk reduction, ISO 13849-1 for safety-related control systems, and ISO 14120 for general guard design. National and regional regulations, such as the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, provide legal context for safeguarding requirements.

Implementation and upkeep require guards that are robust and tamper-resistant, with clearly marked access points and reliable interlocks. Regular inspections, functional tests of safeguards and emergency stops, and maintenance of guarding components are essential.
