Mabon

Mabon is a term with multiple meanings in Welsh culture and modern neopaganism. In Welsh mythology, Mabon mab Modron, or Mabon ap Modron, is a youth who is the son of Modron. He appears in the Mabinogion, most notably in connection with the quest undertaken by Culhwch and Arthur to win the hand of Olwen. In the tale, Mabon is held in the Otherworld by the King of Annwn and is recovered as part of the heroes’ journey. The name itself derives from the Welsh mab, meaning “son” or “boy.”

In modern neopagan practice, Mabon refers to a seasonal festival tied to the autumn equinox. It is observed as the second of the Wheel of the Year Sabbats in many Wiccan and other pagan traditions. Mabon marks the time when day and night are approximately equal, symbolizing balance. It is commonly associated with harvest, gratitude, and reflection on the fruits of the year’s labor. Rituals and customs vary but often emphasize harvest abundance, thanksgiving, and preparing for the darker months ahead.

Etymologically, the mythic and the modern festival share a connection through Welsh heritage. The mythological Mabon embodies themes of search, rescue, and restoration, while the modern festival uses the name to designate a half-year turning point and a period of gratitude and preparation.
