Maaperäinfiltraatio, often translated as soil infiltration, refers to the process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil. This is a fundamental hydrological process that influences surface runoff, groundwater recharge, and soil moisture content. The rate at which infiltration occurs is dependent on several factors, including soil type, soil structure, existing soil moisture, antecedent conditions, land cover, and slope.

When soil is already saturated, its capacity to absorb more water decreases, leading to reduced infiltration. Steep slopes can increase the speed of water flow over the surface, giving it less time to infiltrate.
