Maalaussiveltimet, often translated as paintbrushes, are essential tools used in painting for applying paint to a surface. They are typically made up of a handle and bristles, which can be natural or synthetic. The type of bristles, their length, thickness, and arrangement, as well as the shape of the brush head, all influence the way paint is applied and the resulting effects.

Natural bristles, derived from animal hair like hog, badger, or sable, are often favored for oil-based paints and varnishes. They tend to be more absorbent and can hold a good amount of paint, allowing for smooth, even strokes. Synthetic bristles, commonly made from nylon or polyester, are more durable and resistant to solvents, making them ideal for acrylic and water-based paints. They generally offer more spring and control.

Paintbrushes come in a vast array of shapes and sizes. Flat brushes, with their broad, rectangular heads, are useful for covering large areas and creating sharp, defined lines. Round brushes, with pointed or rounded tips, are best for detail work, outlining, and creating fine lines. Filbert brushes combine aspects of both flat and round brushes, offering versatility for blending and shaping. Fan brushes, resembling a fan, are excellent for blending colors and creating textures like grass or hair. The choice of brush depends largely on the medium being used, the desired effect, and the artist's personal preference.
