This non-invasive procedure utilizes a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the body's internal structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for repeated examinations and for sensitive patient groups.

The primary principle behind MRI is the behavior of hydrogen atoms within the body's tissues when exposed to a strong magnetic field. The magnetic field aligns the protons in these hydrogen atoms. Radiofrequency pulses are then applied, which knock these aligned protons out of equilibrium. When the pulse is turned off, the protons realign with the magnetic field, releasing energy that is detected by the MRI scanner.
