MRAt

MRAt stands for Magnetic Resonance Angiography of the Arteries. It is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology and a contrast agent to visualize the arteries throughout the body. This procedure is particularly useful for detecting and evaluating abnormalities within the arterial system, such as blockages, narrowing (stenosis), aneurysms (bulging of artery walls), and dissections (tears in artery walls).

The process typically involves the patient lying on a table that slides into a large, tube-shaped MRI scanner. A contrast dye, usually gadolinium-based, is administered intravenously. This dye travels through the bloodstream and enhances the visibility of the arteries on the MRI images. The MRI scanner then uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the arteries. These images can be reconstructed into three-dimensional views, providing a comprehensive look at the vascular anatomy.

MRAt can be performed on arteries in various parts of the body, including the brain, neck, chest, abdomen, and legs. It is a valuable tool for diagnosing conditions like stroke, peripheral artery disease, and coronary artery disease. The procedure is generally safe, although potential risks associated with the contrast agent, such as allergic reactions or kidney problems in individuals with pre-existing kidney disease, are considered. Patients with certain metallic implants may not be suitable for MRI.
