MRAngiogramm

MRAngiogramm, also known as Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to visualize blood vessels and detect abnormalities such as blockages, aneurysms, or other vascular diseases. Unlike traditional angiography, which uses X-rays and contrast agents, MRA relies on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. This method does not require the injection of contrast agents in most cases, making it safer for patients with allergies or kidney issues.

The procedure involves placing the patient in an MRI scanner and using specialized sequences to generate detailed images of the blood vessels. MRA can be performed using various techniques, including time-of-flight (TOF), phase-contrast (PC), and contrast-enhanced (CE) MRA. TOF MRA is the most common and uses the rapid flow of blood to create contrast between blood vessels and surrounding tissues. PC MRA measures the velocity of blood flow and can detect slow or stagnant blood, which may indicate a blockage. CE MRA uses a contrast agent to enhance the visibility of blood vessels, providing detailed images of the vascular system.

MRA is particularly useful for evaluating the cerebral, peripheral, and visceral vascular systems. It is commonly used to assess the carotid arteries for stenosis or blockages, to evaluate the aorta and its branches for aneurysms or dissections, and to examine the renal arteries for stenosis. The technique is also valuable in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as peripheral artery disease, venous insufficiency, and vascular malformations.

MRA offers several advantages over traditional angiography, including the absence of ionizing radiation, the ability to image soft tissues, and the potential for multi-planar imaging. However, it may have limitations in certain situations, such as when imaging very small vessels or in patients with metallic implants that interfere with the MRI signal. Overall, MRA is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of vascular diseases, providing detailed and non-invasive visualization of the blood vessels.
