MODY

MODY, or maturity-onset diabetes of the young, is a collection of inherited forms of diabetes caused by mutations in a single gene. It is typically autosomal dominant and presents before age 25, though onset can vary. More than a dozen MODY subtypes have been described, with some of the best characterized being MODY1 (HNF4A), MODY2 (GCK), and MODY3 (HNF1A). Clinically, MODY can resemble type 1 or type 2 diabetes but often lacks autoimmune markers and shows specific patterns of glucose dysregulation that depend on the subtype. Genetic testing confirms the diagnosis and enables family screening. Treatment is subtype-dependent: some individuals respond well to low-dose sulfonylureas, while others require insulin or other therapies. Because MODY is rare and mimics other forms of diabetes, correct diagnosis is important for prognosis and management.
