MES interfaces are the software connections that enable a Manufacturing Execution System to exchange data with other systems across the enterprise and on the shop floor. They support real-time collection of production events, execution of manufacturing orders, quality and genealogy data, and traceability required for compliance and optimization.

Common standards and protocols used in MES interfaces include ISA-95/B2MML for structured data exchange between ERP and MES, MTConnect for shop-floor data collection, and OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) or REST/SOAP for device and system integration. Data formats typically include XML and JSON, while message transport may use MQTT, AMQP, or HTTP. Interoperability is aided by mapping to standardized data models and clear data contracts.

Typical interfaces include ERP–MES interfaces for orders, bill of materials, and inventory; MES–PLCs and SCADA interfaces for shop-floor data, alarms, and machine states; MES–WMS interfaces for materials and inventory movements; and MES–LIMS or quality systems interfaces for test results and compliance data. Interfaces may be point-to-point or mediated by an integration layer or enterprise service bus (ESB).

Architectures often employ middleware, API gateways, data historians, and event-driven pipelines to decouple systems and support scalability. Reliability and time-synchronization are critical for accurate traceability; security, access control, and data governance are essential considerations.

Implementation considerations include defining data contracts aligned with ISA-95/B2MML, mapping concepts across domains, selecting appropriate standards, planning for data volume and latency, and establishing monitoring, error handling, and version control. Effective MES interfaces improve production visibility, traceability, and operational efficiency.
