MALTtyyppistä refers to a classification of lymphomas that arise from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). MALT is a diffuse system of lymphoid tissue found in various mucosal surfaces throughout the body, including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and genitourinary tract. When lymphocytes in these tissues proliferate abnormally, they can form MALT lymphomas.

These lymphomas are typically slow-growing and can arise in a variety of locations. Common sites include the stomach, small intestine, salivary glands, thyroid gland, lungs, and eyes. The specific location of the MALT lymphoma often influences the symptoms and diagnostic approach. For instance, gastric MALT lymphomas are frequently associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, and treatment of the infection can sometimes lead to remission of the lymphoma.

MALT lymphomas are generally considered indolent, meaning they grow slowly and may not require immediate treatment. Diagnosis is usually made through biopsy and histological examination, often supplemented by immunohistochemistry to identify specific cell markers. Imaging techniques may be used to determine the extent of the disease.

Treatment strategies for MALT lymphomas vary depending on the location, stage, and patient's overall health. Options can include antibiotics (especially for H. pylori-associated gastric MALT lymphoma), radiation therapy, surgery, or chemotherapy. Surveillance is also a common approach for some early-stage or asymptomatic cases. The prognosis for MALT lymphomas is generally favorable, particularly when diagnosed and treated effectively.
