M12Verbindern, commonly referred to as M12 connectors, are a standardized family of circular electrical connectors widely used in industrial automation, sensor technology, and fieldbus applications. The "M12" designation signifies the metric thread size of the connector's coupling nut, which is 12 millimeters in diameter. This standardized size ensures mechanical compatibility between M12 connectors from different manufacturers.

These connectors are designed to provide robust and reliable connections in harsh environments, offering protection against dust, water, and vibration. They typically feature a screw-locking mechanism that provides a secure mating connection. M12 connectors are available in various configurations, commonly referred to by their pin count and coding. The coding dictates the connector's electrical properties and intended application, preventing incorrect mating. Common codings include A-code, B-code, C-code, D-code, and X-code, each with specific pin arrangements and applications such as power, signal, or data transmission.

A-coded connectors are often used for DC power supply and sensors. B-coded connectors are typically used for fieldbus systems like PROFIBUS. C-coded connectors are designed for AC power applications. D-coded connectors are prevalent in industrial Ethernet and PROFINET applications, supporting data rates up to 100 Mbps. X-coded connectors are designed for high-speed Ethernet, supporting data rates up to 10 Gbps. The housing material, often made of stainless steel or plastic, and the sealing material, typically rubber or silicone, contribute to their environmental resistance, with common IP ratings being IP67 or IP68.
