Løftedrakter

Løftedrakter, also known as lifting suits or squat suits, are specialized garments worn by powerlifters and strongmen during competition and training. These suits are designed to assist the lifter by providing mechanical advantage, primarily in the squat and bench press movements. They are typically made from a very stiff, non-stretchy material, such as a combination of polyester and nylon, or specialized blends engineered for maximal resistance to stretching.

The construction of a løftedrakt is key to its function. It is designed to be extremely tight-fitting, creating a significant amount of stored elastic energy. When the lifter descends in a squat, the suit stretches. Upon ascending, the suit recoils, helping to push the lifter back to the starting position. Similarly, in the bench press, the suit can assist in the lockout phase. Løftedrakter are legal in sanctioned powerlifting federations, but their specifications, such as material thickness and design, are strictly regulated to ensure fair competition. Different types of løftedrakter exist, offering varying degrees of assistance and support, often tailored to the lifter's individual needs and the specific lift. Their use is a common and accepted practice within the sport of powerlifting.
