Lõikamis

Lõikamis is the Estonian term for the process of cutting, trimming, or shaping materials or content. It denotes the act of producing pieces of designated size, shape, or form, and is used across many fields. Lõikamis can be manual or automated and is applied in manufacturing, construction, horticulture, textiles, plastics, and media editing.

In manufacturing and engineering, lõikamis entails dividing raw stock to meet specifications, using tools such as saws, shears, knives, laser cutters, plasma cutters, water jets, punches, and CNC machines. The focus is accuracy, edge quality, and minimizing waste.

In woodworking and metalworking, cutting operations define part geometry, kerf width, and surface quality; operations are integrated with downstream processes like drilling, milling, and finishing.

In textiles and plastics, cutting shapes patterns from fabrics or sheets, using handheld blades, die-cutting, or CNC cutting, with attention to grain, stretch, and tolerances.

In horticulture, lõikamis refers to propagation by cuttings: selecting healthy plant segments, preparing nodes, and rooting them in suitable media to produce new plants.

In media and information technology, editing and video production use cutting to assemble sequences, synchronize scenes, or remove extraneous material, often requiring careful planning and version control.

Safety and quality: proper PPE, machine guarding, overload protection, and training are standard; correct tool selection, blade maintenance, and waste handling reduce accidents and improve precision. Standards may apply across industries, including ISO quality management and machine-specific guidelines.
