Lågtryckscentrum

A lågtryckscentrum, often referred to as a low-pressure area or simply a "low," is a region in the atmosphere where the atmospheric pressure is lower than its surrounding areas. This pressure difference is the driving force behind weather systems. In the Northern Hemisphere, air typically circulates counter-clockwise around a lågtryckscentrum, while in the Southern Hemisphere, the circulation is clockwise. This is due to the Coriolis effect.

Lågtryckscentrum are associated with rising air. As air converges at the surface and is forced upwards, it cools and condenses, leading to cloud formation and precipitation. Therefore, these systems are frequently linked to unsettled weather, including clouds, rain, snow, and strong winds. The intensity of a lågtryckscentrum is indicated by the difference in pressure between its center and the surrounding environment; a steeper pressure gradient generally results in stronger winds.
