Lämpövastustuskyvyn, known in English as thermal resistance, is a measure of a material's ability to impede the flow of heat. It quantifies how much a material resists the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter region to a colder region. High thermal resistance indicates that a material is a good insulator, while low thermal resistance suggests it is a good conductor.

The concept is the reciprocal of thermal conductivity. While thermal conductivity describes how well a material conducts heat, thermal resistance describes how well it resists it. Thermal resistance is typically expressed in units of Kelvin per Watt (K/W) or degrees Celsius per Watt (°C/W). A higher value of thermal resistance means that a larger temperature difference is required to drive a given amount of heat flow through the material.

Factors influencing thermal resistance include the material's composition, thickness, and surface area. Thicker materials generally have higher thermal resistance, and materials with a larger surface area for heat transfer will have lower thermal resistance for a given thickness. Different materials possess distinct inherent thermal resistance properties. For instance, materials like fiberglass, foam, and air have high thermal resistance and are commonly used as insulators in buildings and other applications where heat loss or gain needs to be minimized. Conversely, metals like copper and aluminum have low thermal resistance, making them excellent conductors of heat, utilized in applications such as heat sinks and cooking utensils. Understanding thermal resistance is crucial in various fields, including engineering, construction, and thermodynamics, for designing efficient thermal management systems and optimizing energy usage.
