Lämpötilajäykkyys, also known as temperature stiffness, is a term used in materials science and engineering to describe how a material's stiffness or elastic modulus changes with temperature. Generally, most materials become less stiff as their temperature increases, and stiffer as their temperature decreases. This phenomenon is a consequence of the increased kinetic energy of atoms and molecules at higher temperatures, which weakens the interatomic or intermolecular bonds responsible for a material's structural integrity and resistance to deformation. Conversely, at lower temperatures, reduced atomic motion leads to stronger bonds and thus increased stiffness.

The extent to which a material exhibits temperature stiffness varies significantly depending on its composition and structure. Metals, for example, typically show a relatively gradual decrease in stiffness with rising temperature, while polymers can experience a more pronounced softening, especially as they approach their glass transition temperature. Understanding temperature stiffness is crucial for designing components and structures that will operate across a range of temperatures. For instance, in aerospace applications, materials must maintain sufficient stiffness at both extreme cold and high operating temperatures. Similarly, in automotive engineering, the performance of engine components and other parts can be affected by significant temperature fluctuations. Accurate prediction and characterization of temperature stiffness are therefore essential for ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of many engineered systems.
