Lämpöstressi

Lämpöstressi, also known as heat stress, refers to the physiological and psychological responses of the body to excessive heat. It occurs when the body's ability to dissipate heat is overwhelmed by the environmental temperature and humidity. Heat stress can lead to a range of symptoms, including fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Heat exhaustion is characterized by symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, cold and clammy skin, fast but weak pulse, nausea, and fainting. It typically occurs when the body loses more fluid and electrolytes than it can replace. Heatstroke, a more severe condition, can cause symptoms like a high fever, hot and dry skin, rapid and strong pulse, and loss of consciousness. If left untreated, heatstroke can be life-threatening.

Prevention and management of heat stress involve staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and seeking shade. In workplaces, employers should provide adequate rest breaks and ensure that workers are aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stress. In extreme cases, medical intervention may be necessary to cool the body and restore fluid and electrolyte balance.
